Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Application Guidelines for Postgraduate Diploma in Management (PGDM)

The Business School is committed to providing equitable access to higher education through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) pathway. This initiative is aimed at individuals who possess significant managerial experience and non-formal learning but may not meet the traditional academic entry requirements for the PGDM programme. The following guidelines are designed to assist prospective candidates in preparing and submitting their RPL application.

1. Introduction

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an evaluative process that allows for the identification, documentation, assessment, and recognition of learning obtained through informal and non-formal means. The PGDM programme welcomes applications from candidates who, through their professional experience and learning, can demonstrate competency equivalent to the programme's entry requirements.

2. Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for RPL admission to the PGDM programme, applicants must satisfy the following criteria:

  • Substantial work experience as evidenced in a comprehensive curriculum vitae (CV) and portfolio of evidence (PoE), indicating the capacity to perform at NQF Level 7 or higher,
  • Completion of Executive Education Programmes at an appropriate level, with commendable performance in combination with practical work experience may also be considered.

3. Application Process

Prospective candidates wishing to apply through the RPL pathway for the PGDM programme are required to follow a structured application process designed to assess their suitability and readiness for postgraduate study. Please adhere to the following steps:

a. Submission of a Formal Application: Access the online application portal and complete the application form. As part of this process, you are required to attach the following documents:

  • Comprehensive CV: Your curriculum vitae should detail your educational background, professional experience, leadership roles, and any significant achievements.
  • Portfolio of Evidence (PoE): Compile a PoE that showcases your qualifications, professional experience, leadership roles, and any relevant training or courses completed. This portfolio is crucial in demonstrating your competency and readiness for postgraduate study at NQF Level 8.

b. Admission Test: Candidates who successfully pass the initial paper screening stage will be invited to complete an admission test. This test, administered via our TTS (Testing and Training Services), evaluates your analytical and critical thinking abilities. The performance threshold required for PGDM consideration will be communicated during the application process.

c. Interview: Should you meet or exceed the Admission Test threshold; you will be invited to an interview. The interview panel will consist of the PGDM Programme Leader and at least one other member of the Business School selection committee. This discussion aims to further assess your suitability and preparedness for the PGDM programme, allowing you to articulate your motivations and how your experiences have equipped you for this level of study.

4. Portfolio of Evidence (PoE) Requirements

Your PoE is a critical component of the RPL application. It should include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Detailed Curriculum Vitae,
  • Certified copies of all academic qualifications,
  • Evidence of professional achievements and managerial experience,
  • Certificates of completion for any relevant short courses or professional development programmes,
  • A personal statement detailing your motivation for pursuing the PGDM through RPL and how you envision applying your acquired knowledge and skills.

5. Selection Process

RPL applications will be reviewed by the Business School selection committee, with the endorsement of the programme leader and Deputy Director: Teaching & Learning. The selection criteria will focus on the evidence of learning achievements and professional experience relevant to the management field.

6. Important Dates

  • RPL Application Closure Date:
31 July of the year preceding intended enrolment.
  • Candidates are encouraged to submit their applications well in advance of the deadline to facilitate a thorough review process.
